Having been well received at the Edinburgh Festival, Bristol gets a chance to see this impassioned one man performance...

Bristol Indymedia and Bristol ABC, in association with Bristol Anarchist Bookfair, present PRISON ?

A one man performance written and performed by Charlie Ryder. This is a true story which is creatively told using a variety of theatrical devices including puppetry, masks, physical theatre and dance.

Monday 6 September 2010 - Doors 7.30pm for 8pm performance.
£3/4 but nobody turned away for lack of funds

The Cube cinema, Dove St South, Bristol BS2 8JD

In October 1993 Charlie Ryder took part in a demonstration to shut down the BNP headquarters in Welling, south-east London. This developed into a serious riot, and a few months later he was featured on the TV show Crime Monthly. He was arrested and after a two year wait was sent to prison for 16 months. In prison Charlie kept a scrapbook to record poems, letters and art work. Charlie, not a professional actor but an open and impassioned performer, has brought the scrapbook to life as a full production.

What does going to prison really entail? This gives a rare and honest insight into the prison system, putting a face to what is often the faceless idea of 'the prisoner'. The play depicts the trauma of prison, in particular the de-humanising effects of well known procedures, such as being strip-searched, are clearly examined.

DEBATE: At the end of the show Charlie will hold a Q and A session - your opportunity to debate and discuss issues raised by the show.

Support people powered media over media-by-millionaires; here's how you can help...

With recent reports that media-mogul Rupert Murdoch (owner of The Times, The Sun, Sky TV and much, much more) is getting 'too powerful' resonating in the media, it recently emerged that his US news arm, Fox News, gave $1,000,000 to the Republican party. Here in Bristol, one company has a virtual stranglehold on print media, owning the Evening Post, Western Daily Press, Clifton Chronicle, Venue and many more South West newspapers; the Daily Mail Group. It is planning an expansion of it's online news coverage in Bristol. The Daily Mail Group competes with the Tindle Newspapers Ltd and Newsquest. Newsquest are in turn owned by Gannett, a giant US media corporation owning hundreds of newspapers, which has been accused of being anti-union. Tindle Newspapers Ltd itself made news during the Iraq war when it's owner, Sir Ray Tindle, declared that none of his titles should cover anti-war protests - at a stroke deciding what people should and should not know. Are these the multi-millionaires and multi-multi million valued companies ho we should be trusting to inform us of how the austerity cuts will impact us? Or how the war in Afghanistan is going? Or of the real state of our communities and environment?

By contrast, Bristol Indymedia is financed 100% by donations from people like you! We have no advertising, do not change any fees for the use of the site, do not get money from grants or funds. All our work is carried out by volunteers. This means we are financially independent from any pressure; it also means we need your help to keep the site running. We've got a limited run of t-shirts for sale for £10 and 100% of the proceeds of which will go to pay for our servers, publicity material and to finance our outreach events. Stick one in the eye of the media billionaires - and support a more democratic vision of media... buy a t-shirt, donate us some cash, give us a small donation monthly and/or get involved!

Pigeon writes: On Thursday 26th August police illegally evicted a squat on 54 Freemantle Rd. No court papers had been served or warning given, yet police smashed in the front door and used dog teams to intimidate the residents and their friends whilst a police helicopter hovered overhead. Residents were not permitted to collect their belongings, which are apparently being held at Bridewell Station, presumably a further intimidation and information gathering strategy.

Under English & Welsh law squatting is a civil matter to be resolved in the civil courts between the squatters and the owners and the police should not involve themselves unless a bailiff authorised by the court has been obstructed.

bookfair collective writes Its all systems go down at the bookfair bunker. After a late flurry of stall applications left us having to cut some stallholders table requests (and then there were more that missed the deadline!); and having dealt with the tricky task of reducing 29 workshop proposals down to 15 (originally 12, but we found 3 more spaces), and letting the unsuccesful proposers know the result; the bookfair programme is now complete!

Attached is a timetable listing all the meetings/workshops/films/talks by the hour across all four rooms. Bookfair doors open at 10.30am to the public, meetings run from 11am to 6pm. In case you forgot, its at Hamilton House, 80 Stokes Croft, Bristol BS1 3QY.
