the bookfair collective writes: The 2010 Bristol Anarchist Bookfair is on Saturday 11 September, from 10.30am to 6pm
At Hamilton House, 80 Stokes Croft, Bristol BS1 3QY (fully accessible via ramp & lifts)

At the bookfair we offer you: 48 tables of stalls over 2 floors, 28 separate meetings/workshops/films spread over 4 rooms (including a Bristol Indymedia room and a Radical History Zone), a kids space, and an all day vegan cafe. All are welcome - come along and find out more, just step inside the door!

This year’s Bristol Bookfair will take place in the midst of the most serious ongoing crisis of capitalism for 80 years, against a background of drastic austerity measures (cuts, unemployment, tax rises, wage freezes, inflation) and worsening environmental mayhem. The class war waged against us by the ruling class has come up with an old trick, the coalition governent, this time of the self-serving LibDems and our class enemies the Tory toffs. Their Big Society is nothing but a Big Con, as they seek to roll back a publicly accountable state (well a bit accountable!) and replace it with a privately run corporately controlled one. Behind their PR bullshit of respect, sustainability and freedom lurks the iron fist of authoritarian capitalism making our lives subservient to their profits, our choices dictated to us by them. They tell us we must all share the pain of this crisis, we hope this bookfair will play its part in ensuring that they do indeed share some of our pain.

The aim of the bookfair is to provide a wide range of anarchist and radical literature, ideas, history, debate, theory, meetings, workshops and films, and merchandise. The event will provide a serious taster of anarchist ideas & practices to those people new to such ideas and looking for an alternative to the way things are, but do not have to be. The bookfair also acts as a get together for existing anarchists & radicals - to debate, discuss, network, plot and plan, and of course socailise!

info@bristolstopwar writes: After the protest in Dublin last Saturday, Tony Blair has cancelled his book signing in London. The publication of his memoirs which justify the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have outraged the millions of people across the country who oppose those wars.

Blair knows he cannot appear in public without being confronted by protests over his war crimes and by attempts to make a citizen's arrest.

Fortunately, here in Bristol, Tony Bliar is happy to meet the public and will sign books outside Waterstones in Union Street on Wednesday 8th September from 12 noon to 2pm. He realises that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have resulted in untold suffering – hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and Afghans have died along with hundreds of British troops.

Bristol Stop The War Coalition are pleased to offer this chance for people in Bristol to show how offensive they find the publication of Blair's book

Date: Wednesday 8th September
Time: 12 noon to 2pm
Venue: Outside Waterstones Bookshop, Union Street, Broadmead, Bristol BS1 3XD

Crash writes Carfree Bristol is for those who live without a car, those who would like to see carfree communities develop (like those in Europe such as in Freiburg) or anyone else who wants to share drinks, experiences and generally make life better for carfree living in Bristol.

If, like several of us, you have made the decision to live without a car, you have probably experienced the same mixture of amusement and frustration at organisations who assume everyone drives, or people who simply don't understand how it's possible to live happily without owning a car. Have you ever felt it would be good to mix with people who do understand?

That's one reason why a few of us have decided to set up Carfree Bristol. Our first aim is strictly social - to bring carfree people together. What if your partner has a car but you don't? What if you are driving one at the moment but are aiming to give it up? Whatever your circumstances, we aren't proposing any specific membership criteria. If you support the aims of the group, you are welcome.

Bristol Indymedia and Bristol ABC, in association with Bristol Anarchist Bookfair, present PRISON ?

A one man performance written and performed by Charlie Ryder. This is a true story which is creatively told using a variety of theatrical devices including puppetry, masks, physical theatre and dance.

Monday 6 September 2010 - Doors 7.30pm for 8pm performance.
£3/4 but nobody turned away for lack of funds

The Cube cinema, Dove St South, Bristol BS2 8JD

In October 1993 Charlie Ryder took part in a demonstration to shut down the BNP headquarters in Welling, south-east London. This developed into a serious riot, and a few months later he was featured on the TV show Crime Monthly. He was arrested and after a two year wait was sent to prison for 16 months. In prison Charlie kept a scrapbook to record poems, letters and art work. Charlie, not a professional actor but an open and impassioned performer, has brought the scrapbook to life as a full production.

What does going to prison really entail? This gives a rare and honest insight into the prison system, putting a face to what is often the faceless idea of 'the prisoner'. The play depicts the trauma of prison, in particular the de-humanising effects of well known procedures, such as being strip-searched, are clearly examined.

DEBATE: At the end of the show Charlie will hold a Q and A session - your opportunity to debate and discuss issues raised by the show.
